var fCorinthians162="1 Corinthians 16:2 “Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God has prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.”

The first day of the week literally says \"first of the Sabbath\" which is an Hebraic expression meaning first day after the Sabbath. The Jews marked the days of the week from the Sabbath. Hence, Sunday was the first of the Sabbath, Monday was the second of the Sabbath etc. The translators took the liberty of translating ton sabbatwn as \"first day of the week.\" The phrase \"lay by him in store\" requires close scrutiny for herein lies the controversy. Paul is charging each individual to \"lay by him in store.\" The meaning in the Greek is that each one is to lay something alongside himself, storing it. The Greek words, para heautou means \"alongside himself\" or \"by him.\" Para is found in other English words such as \"parallel\" and \"parable.\" It carries the idea of being alongside something. The second part of the Greek word is the pronoun \"him.\" Therefore, something is being laid alongside one's self. Paul is instructing each disciple to lay something away at home, storing it, every \"first day of the Sabbath.\" He is not telling Christians to bring their money to an assembly and drop it into the basket. All Greek scholars agree that the phrase \"lay by him in store\" means to store goods by yourself at home. The need was food and clothing and this would not be done on the Sabbath but the first day after."

var lincoln="“The use of sabbatismos elsewhere in extant Greek literature gives an indication of its more exact shade of meaning. It is used in Plutarch, De Superstitione 3 (Moralia166A) of Sabbath observance. There are also four occurrences in post canonical literature that are independent of Hebrews 4:9. They are Justin, Dialogue with Trypho 23:3; Epiphanius, Adversus Haereses 30:2:2; Martyrium Petri et Pauli 1; Apostolic Constitutions 2:36:2. In each of these places the term denotes the observance or celebration of the Sabbath. This usage corresponds to the Septuagint usage of the cognate verb sabbatizo (cf. Exodus 16:30; Leviticus. 23:32; 26:34; 2 Chronicles. 36:21). Thus the writer to the Hebrews is saying that since the time of Joshua an observance of the Sabbath rest has been outstanding.”"
